French Connection presents the Autumn Winter 2011 collection, Ladieswear

Autumn Winter 11 sees a new, aesthetically clean and simplified design ethos for French Connection.

The season starts with a fresh, relaxed approach to dressing. The palette starts in deep autumnal hues with shots of green, purple and rich yellows to highlight classic black and grey. Animal prints and textured knitwear are key, layered over fine jersey and relaxed flannel tailoring. Sheer blouses are worn with oversized sleeveless knits and suedette leggings. Skirts are knitted and longer in length or in a cute skater girl cut. Little Black Dresses are given a narrow figure hugging silhouette contrasted against oversized ‘Little House on the Prairie’ check shirts and boyfriend t’s. Classic tailoring is updated in flannel wool with a neat, sharp cut.

Military design influences are apparent in embroidery, epaulettes, outerwear and hues of red and camel with fluid cuts creating a deliberately feminine feel. Dresses are made from wool in a longer calf length cut with ankle length cardigans and knitted skirts following the extended, calf grazing hemline. 60’s baby doll dresses and sculptural waved hem blazers in grey and black are key.

Outerwear is traditional, smart and follows the classic feel in duffles, crombies and swing coats. There’s an attention to layering, mixing up textures and proportions using premium jersey basics. Tea dresses add a vintage feminine feel in mustard and teal worn with knitted cardigans accessorized with a skinny belt and oversized leather tote. Make a statement in the knitted 70’s hot-pants and matching bow back top.

The season ends in a strong, glamorous 70’s feel with full length evening gowns, faux fur jackets, luxurious velvet print dresses and decadent embellishment. Texture is delivered through chunky tweed knits worn with wide leg trousers. Jumpsuits come in jersey or formal wide leg styles with beaded necklines.

Autumn marks the launch of the new ‘Classics’ collection – elevated wardrobe essentials made in premium fabrics. With a range of trouser cuts – narrow, cropped, kick flare to wide leg with blazers in preppy grey wool to contemporary clean cuts in black with extended lapels. Shirts are silk or sheer all in classic hues of grey, cream and black. Vests are silk or fine jersey; jumpsuits are designed in a formal flannel with an essential crombie completing the new everyday essentials collection.

Ladylike accessories take inspiration from one-off vintage finds with skinny tortoiseshell belts, faux crocodile skin envelope clutches, large tan leather totes and velvet pill-box hats with netting. Leopard and tiger prints adorn clutch bags, super fine belts and wrist held purses in Buffalo hair. Gloves follow the prim feel in elbow length leather with faux fur trim, leather driving gloves with bow detail and sheepskin mittens. Wide brim felt fedoras and trilbies in warm winter hues offer a chic alternative to traditional winter head gear but for those who want to indulge in some playful winter accessories opt for the oversized bobble hats in olive to baby pink, an extra-large pom-pom scarf or a large shaggy snood.

Autumn Winter 11 French Connection Menswear

The Man prepares to face Autumn this year with a refined wardrobe of sophisticated yet fresh menswear looks that stay true to his rugged, masculine nature.

French Connection has a strong military influence this season with the focus on simple utilitarian pieces updated with subtle design tweaks. A classic autumnal colour palette of faded greens, washed out yellows and pale blues continues the military theme, while bold jolts of colour in violet and fuchsia give the range a modern feel.


Casual shirting is reworked for Autumn with overlay pocket details and textured seams taking inspiration from authentic military styles, for a bolder look floral prints and subtle checks are updated in vibrant colours with utility pockets and epaulet details. Playful graphic prints draw on the collection’s military influences adorning cotton tees, perfect for layering and adding a light hearted twist to the range.

As the temperature drops our Man layers up against the elements; cable knit cardigans and bright engineer stripe pullovers offer a clean and refined look, while luxury fineknit hoodies have bold stripe details, giving this streetwear classic an air of grace. Essential chunky knitwear is reworked with subtle tweed effect patterns, rib details and funnel neck collars for a fresh take on wardrobe staples.

Outerwear has also been updated for Autumn with the addition of a lightweight khaki trench and a luxury Olive green pea coat. Pair with slim leg cargo trousers or unwashed straight cut denim for a clean silhouette.

The collection’s simplified and refined feel is continued with lightweight technical jackets and slim leg denim in monochrome set against essential polos and block stripe cardigans in bold colours for a clean, modern sportswear feel.

For Autumn 11 the FCUK collection takes a dark turn, inspired by Victorian horror and old fashion circus freaks; a subdued palette of faded greys, blacks and browns is punctuated with worn out blues and dusty camel, paired with tough and rugged styling to give the collection a strong, defined silhouette.

Classic check shirting and jersey tees are updated using a traditional indigo dye process; this ancient technique gradually breaks down with wear helping to give each garment an authentic, individual character and leaves the collection with a mellow and overcast finish.

Knitwear is bold and chunky, drawing on vintage styles for inspiration with shawl necks, utility pockets and zip details adding a contemporary twist. A roll neck fairisle is a must have for Autumn, paired with relaxed cords for a rugged and manly look. While dusty knits and a reversible flying jacket are set against bleached jeans and re-imagined chinos that continue the collections menacing theme.

Sinister overdyed prints inspired by circus freaks adorn cotton tees, while check shirts are left faded and reworked with patch pockets and zip necks to be layered for a contrasting pattern clash. A fully lined fur trimmed parka, a first for FCUK, is indispensible for any man and looks set to be the must have coat for Autumn.

Essential accessories are updated with subtle style tweaks to give them a fresh feel for the season ahead; traditional stripe scarves have been distorted and reworked to give an engaging blur-effect pattern. Chunky knit snoods and fur lined trapper hats are perfect for battling the elements while more refined jersey and cotton styles give a clean, more relaxed alternative. The essential winter fairisle has been re-worked into a bold abstract print and applied to chunky knit scarves, bobble hats and manly mittens. Men should not fear the bag and this season the oversized canvas holdall is the perfect accessory for any wintery weekend away.
